Technique Week

After a couple of weeks of playing around and getting back into training I've decided to start off with a Technique Week. Generally these will be of lower intensity and therefore recovery weeks within the training plan, so if you have been pushing it over the last couple of weeks then take this opportunity to back it off, lower fatigue and get those fitness gains. If not we can keep building from those first two weeks.


A week full of drills, mainly focused on Freestyle but we'll be incorporating other strokes as well. I will try my best to explain drills or give video examples where possible.


Things to focus on

  • Body position - In all four strokes the height of your hips will determine how fast you are! (however, sacrificing the rest of the body for high hips doesn't count!)

  • Relaxing and the switching on and off of muscles - one of the big secrets of swimming in learning how to only use the muscles that you need at only the time that you need them.

  • Alignment - alignment will give you more than a powerful pull!

  • Rotation and Timing - these two things are tied together within the stroke.

  • Kick - the kick also being tied to rotation and timing.

  • Catching, Pulling and Pushing - without negatively affecting the body position. The arm action should be floated through the shoulder and not hinged.
